Nail Care Between Salon Visits: Pro Tips
Keep your nails looking fresh longer with these simple habits. Your at-home routine makes all the difference between appointments.
Nail Care Between Salon Visits: Pro Tips
A fresh manicure feels incredible — but it does not have to fade fast. With the right habits between appointments, you can keep your nails looking polished and healthy for significantly longer.
Here are the pro tips we share with clients at Hobson's Edge to help their nail services last and their natural nails stay strong.
1. Moisturize Daily — Especially Your Cuticles
Dry cuticles are the enemy of a long-lasting manicure. When cuticles dry out and crack, they pull at the polish near the nail base and cause lifting and chipping.
Apply a cuticle oil or a rich hand cream every day — ideally before bed so it can absorb overnight. Look for products with jojoba oil, vitamin E, or almond oil. A little goes a long way.
Make it a habit: keep your cuticle oil on your nightstand so you do not forget.
2. Wear Gloves for Household Tasks
Water is one of the biggest threats to a manicure. Repeated exposure to water — dishes, cleaning, even long showers — causes the nail to expand and contract, which breaks down the bond between the polish and the nail.
Wear rubber gloves when washing dishes or cleaning with chemicals. It takes 10 seconds to put them on and it can add days to your manicure's life.
3. Avoid Using Your Nails as Tools
This one sounds obvious, but it is one of the most common ways people chip their polish or break a nail. Opening packages, popping open cans, scraping stickers — all of these put stress on the nail tip where chips are most likely to start.
Use a pen cap, a coin, or an actual tool. Your nails will thank you.
4. Apply a Top Coat Every Few Days
If you have regular polish (not gel), a fresh layer of top coat every two to three days seals the edges and adds a new layer of protection. It refreshes the shine and significantly extends wear time.
Make sure to cap the free edge — run the brush along the very tip of the nail to seal it completely.
5. Keep Nails Filed and Even
A small snag or uneven edge can catch on fabric and cause a tear that ruins the whole nail. Keep a nail file handy and smooth out any rough edges as soon as you notice them.
File in one direction rather than back and forth — the sawing motion can weaken the nail structure over time.
6. Stay Hydrated
Nail health starts from the inside. Dehydration shows up in brittle, peeling nails. Drinking enough water and eating a diet with adequate protein, biotin, and healthy fats supports strong nail growth.
If your nails are consistently thin or breaking, it may be worth looking at your nutrition alongside your topical routine.
7. Do Not Pick or Peel Your Polish
When gel polish starts to lift at the edges, it is tempting to peel it off. Resist the urge. Peeling gel takes layers of your natural nail with it, leaving the nail thin, weak, and prone to breakage.
When your gel starts to lift, book a removal appointment. A professional soak-off protects the nail underneath.
8. Give Your Nails a Break Between Services
If you wear gel or acrylics regularly, giving your natural nails a break every few months helps them recover and stay strong. Use that time to apply a strengthening base coat and focus on hydration.
A short break now prevents long-term damage that can make future services harder to maintain.
When to Book Your Next Appointment
Most gel manicures look their best for two to three weeks. After that, growth at the base becomes noticeable and the polish starts to show wear. Regular clients at Hobson's Edge typically book every two to three weeks to stay looking sharp.
We offer nail services at our Fort Wayne studio — from classic manicures to gel polish. Book your next nail appointment and come in looking and feeling your best.
