How to Maintain Your Hair Color Between Salon Appointments

Getting your hair colored is an investment — in time, money, and the confidence that comes with a look you love. The last thing you want is for that color to fade in two weeks. The good news: with the right habits at home, you can keep your color looking salon-fresh for significantly longer between visits.

Here's exactly what our stylists recommend.

Switch to a Color-Safe Shampoo Immediately

This is the single most impactful change you can make. Regular shampoos contain sulfates — detergents that strip color molecules from the hair shaft every time you wash. Color-safe, sulfate-free shampoos clean your hair without that aggressive stripping action.

Look for labels that say:

  • Sulfate-free
  • Color-protecting
  • For color-treated hair

It's a small swap that makes a noticeable difference within the first few weeks.

Wash Less Frequently

Every time you shampoo, some color washes out. It's unavoidable — but you can slow the process by washing less often.

If you currently wash daily, try stretching to every other day. If you're already at every other day, try every 2–3 days. Use a dry shampoo at the roots between washes to absorb oil and add volume without touching your color.

Your hair will also thank you — over-washing strips natural oils that keep hair healthy and shiny.

Always Use Cool Water to Rinse

Hot water opens the hair cuticle, which lets color molecules escape. Cool or lukewarm water keeps the cuticle sealed, locking color in and adding shine.

You don't have to suffer through a cold shower — just turn the temperature down for the final rinse. Thirty seconds of cool water at the end of your wash makes a real difference over time.

Use a Heat Protectant Every Single Time

Heat is one of the fastest ways to fade color and damage color-treated hair. Blow dryers, flat irons, and curling wands all accelerate color loss — especially on lightened or bleached hair.

Before any heat styling, apply a heat protectant spray or cream from mid-shaft to ends. This creates a barrier between your hair and the tool, reducing damage and helping color last longer.

Protect Your Hair from the Sun

UV rays break down color pigments just like they fade fabric left in the sun. If you spend a lot of time outdoors — especially in summer — this adds up fast.

Options for sun protection:

  • UV-protectant hair products — sprays and leave-ins with UV filters
  • Hats and scarves — the most effective option for extended sun exposure
  • Leave-in conditioner — adds a layer of protection and keeps hair moisturized

This matters most for blondes and anyone with vivid fashion colors, which are the most UV-sensitive.

Deep Condition Weekly

Color processing — especially lightening — can leave hair feeling dry and porous. Porous hair loses color faster because the cuticle doesn't seal properly. Regular deep conditioning treatments help restore moisture and smooth the cuticle, which means better color retention and healthier-looking hair.

Use a deep conditioning mask once a week, focusing on mid-lengths and ends. Leave it on for at least 5–10 minutes before rinsing.

Avoid Chlorine and Saltwater

Both chlorine and saltwater are harsh on color-treated hair. Chlorine is especially damaging to blondes — it can cause a greenish tint and significant fading. Saltwater dries hair out and opens the cuticle.

Before swimming:

  • Wet your hair with fresh water first (saturated hair absorbs less chlorine)
  • Apply a leave-in conditioner or hair oil as a barrier
  • Wear a swim cap if you're doing laps regularly

After swimming, rinse your hair with fresh water as soon as possible.

Know When to Come Back In

Even with perfect home care, color fades and roots grow. Here's a general guide for when to book your next appointment:

  • All-over color / gray coverage: Every 4–6 weeks
  • Highlights / foils: Every 6–10 weeks
  • Balayage: Every 3–6 months
  • Toning / gloss: Every 4–8 weeks

If you're unsure, ask your stylist at your next appointment — they'll give you a personalized timeline based on your specific color and how fast your hair grows.
